Lev Vygotsky

1896–1934

A short biography

The Soviet psychologist wrote about language, thought and cultural tools during a short career. He considered development beyond individual maturation. Translations and later collections brought his work to international readers.

What does this figure represent in psychology?

The zone of proximal development concerns the relationship between independent performance and performance with assistance. Language is linked with organising thought as well as communicating. Students can ask how assessment accounts for support and culture; later educational terms should not automatically be attributed to him.

Key concepts

Mediation: language and cultural tools organising activity. Zone of proximal development: developmental possibilities with assistance.

A question for the reader

What different capacities become visible when a task is completed independently and with guidance?
